COUNSELOR TRAINING PROGRAM

We at the San Fernando Valley Counseling Center, cordially invite you to become an integral part of a dedicated nonprofit organization with a 38 year history of providing quality, affordable, low cost mental health counseling to the community.

Our Center reaches the underserved whose psychological needs might not be met in any other way. We are currently a Center of about 40 volunteer counselors and 7 supervisors. An atmosphere of community service makes the Center a very exciting and creative place that can add a new dimension to your life.

We conduct two training classes each year which begin in January and July. The training program is available to MFT interns, trainees and volunteers from the community. The program meets BBS training requirements. We have an Information Day during which we explain the entire program and give applicants an opportunity to meet us and see our facility. The Information Day for the January class will be in November 2010. If you are interested in attending, please call to have your name placed on a list to be notified of the date. The number to call is 818-341-1111, Ext. 306. You may also send an email to our website at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it . An email or phone message should include your name, address and phone number.

Our next class will be starting in January 2011 and will last approximately four months. The training consists of two parts: 1) An experiential portion which is held on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 2) A two hour lecture which is held on Tuesdays, either following the first group meeting from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., or from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the evening. Some of these lectures may be scheduled on Saturday mornings.

Since we have no outside funding and rely on client fees and counselor donations to fund our organization, we do request a monthly, tax deductible donation from our counselors. Interns and trainees seeking hours for licensure make a monthly pledge of $65.00. Volunteer (paraprofessional) counselors make a monthly pledge of $30.00 to $65.00.

Once the training is completed counselors attend a weekly two hour supervision group and are required to see four clients per week. In addition they are required to attend Workshop/Staff meetings. These are held six Saturdays each year from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you too will desire to take part in our mission to provide the benefits of counseling to the community. It is our belief that each individual, regardless of financial means, should have access to affordable counseling. We hope you will join us in this mission.
