Who We Are

SFVCC was founded by Claire Greene in 1971 with the mission of
making mental health counseling services available to those who
needed that support but simply couldn’t afford it. Working from the
basement of First United Methodist Church in Van Nuys, CA, she
established SFVCC with a team of volunteer mental health
paraprofessionals, under the direction and supervision of
psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and licensed marriage and family
counselors. As a small organization with a large impact, SFVCC has
continued to use this model, in addition to incorporating trainees and
associates, to improve the mental health and wellbeing of thousands of
low-income individuals and families.

Recipients of the 2023 CAMFT Outstanding Agency Award

SFVCC was awarded the 2023 CAMFT Outstanding Agency Award

The San Fernando Valley Counseling Center (SFVCC) actively serves the San Fernando Valley and LA County community with a wide-range of mental health services and helps pre-licensees through a comprehensive training program. The agency has helped an estimated 1,000 new mental health professionals complete their hours and become licensed. Those mental health professionals provide outstanding care and mental health services to approximately 25,000 individuals in San Fernando Valley on a sliding scale fee structure that makes quality counseling services available to low-income individuals and families. SFVCC’s counselors address a wide range of mental and behavioral health issues including stress disorders, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse and treat individuals, couples, and families, and offer domestic violence counseling and group counseling. SFVCC also receives referrals from the state’s Victims of Crime program as well as from the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for mandated counseling or classes.

We’re excited to share that our organization has earned a 2023 Gold Seal of Transparency with Candid! Now, you can support our work with trust and confidence by viewing our profile here.
