How to Become a Client

Are you in need of affordable and accessible mental health services?

SFVCC can help. Please call the Center at 818-341-1111 ext 388 to connect to our intake line and leave a message.

Our intake coordinator will contact you to conduct a quick screening to ensure our center is a place where your needs can be met. If we believe we can help you, we will assign you to a counselor who will contact you to schedule your first appointment.

The screening will take about 15-20 minutes and will require your gross family income. During the screening your per session fee will be assessed and you will be notified of the cost per session based on income and dependents.

If we are unable to meet your needs for any reason, we will provide you with referrals to other facilities and community resources.

  • Please give us a call at 818-341-1111 to speak with our Intake Coordinator, who will ask you some questions about yourself. The purpose of this brief phone interview is to get a sense of what you are seeking therapy for, as well as whether your situation is a good fit for our counselors, who are all pre-licensed and supervised by licensed psychotherapists. In addition, you can schedule a consultation using the Calendly link.

  • The intake coordinator will find the best counselor available based on your situation and availability. In situations where the ideal counselor is not available at our center, we can also provide outside referrals.

  • Therapy can absolutely be for you, regardless of your current, temporary, or long-term situation(s). Online or in-person therapy can provide you with a rational or different perspective, as well as aid you with the tools to better communicate, understand, cope, and create a brighter future. Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to someone and gain a fresh perspective, no matter what you are going through.

  • We customize therapy to each individual client, and therefore cannot predict how many sessions it will take for each client to reach their goals. We have worked with some clients that come in with one specific issue they want to address, and when these clients are ready and able to complete homework assignments each week, they tend to move through therapy relatively quickly. In other cases, clients may have more complex challenges and/or busy lives and setting aside even 50 minutes a week to come to therapy is a feat for them. For these clients, therapy may take a longer time. We will work with you at your pace, and our hope is to help you reach your goals and to reap the benefits of therapy as quickly as possible.

  • To provide effective therapy, we ask our clients to attend sessions weekly at the start of therapy. Once they have made progress and have met their goals, we might reduce the frequency of sessions in preparation for wrapping up therapy, at which point, we will invite clients to return if they ever need additional support or a “tune-up.”

  • Yes, both! At San Fernando Valley Counseling Center, we have counselors who are available for either in-person or remote (telehealth) counseling sessions for adult individuals, couples, or children and adolescents.

  • Teletherapy is therapy provided by a counselor via a video connection that’s secure and remote, such as Zoom. It’s like traditional in-person therapy, but with the convenience of being available at different times and locations for those with tight schedules, or who travel for work. Teletherapy has been found to be just as effective as in-person therapy, so it can be a great option for those unable to attend sessions in person.

  • For safety reasons, you cannot stay totally anonymous during your teletherapy sessions. All medical platforms require client confidentiality, and we totally respect that right, however you would need to provide us with factual information just as you would with any other doctor's visit. If you have any questions or concerns regarding anonymity or confidentiality, you can speak with us by calling: 818-341-1111 and we’d be more than happy to help.

  • We understand that life gets in the way, and you are busy! That’s why we offer evening and weekend appointments, in addition to weekday times, to accommodate busy lifestyles and schedules. You deserve to have peace of mind, and we’re here to help you get there.

  • Our sessions are 50 minutes in length. If clients are interested in or would benefit from a longer session, we are also able to provide services in 75-minute or 100-minute increments. The cost of these sessions is prorated based on the cost of a 50-minute session.

  • We offer sliding scale session fees that are determined based on the gross monthly income of the household and whether you have dependents. Our lowest rate for sessions is $30.

  • We are not in-network with any insurance companies, and we are not on any insurance panels. SFVCC exists to provide affordable counseling services to those who do not have mental health coverage, or for whom regular therapy sessions would not be affordable even if using insurance.

  • We are not in-network with any insurance companies, including Medi-Cal. There are several non-profits that are contracted with the Department of Mental Health and accept Medi-Cal. More information can be found at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health website.

  • Yes! All our therapists are LGBTQ+ affirming. We are also affirming different and alternative relationships, including polyamorous relationships.

  • Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate requests for a letter for an emotional support animal as all our counselors are pre-licensed individuals in training and working under the license of their supervisor.

  • We are currently working to offer groups to help folks manage a variety of challenges. We have found that groups can be incredibly effective and for many, are less cost prohibitive. We invite you to reach out to us if you’re interested in joining one of our groups!

  • Unfortunately, we are unable to provide service animal certifications or support pet authorizations. Please inquire with your personal Primary Care Physician or Therapist (through your insured provider) to request a referral or further guidance on this matter.
